Thermostats and controls

The control that tells the system what to do.

We service and replace thermostats and the controls that run a heating and cooling system. That work shows up on service calls and on new-system installs.

Two ways this work shows up.

Thermostats are controls. The visit depends on whether the existing system has a problem, or whether we are putting in new equipment.

On a service call

A thermostat that is not controlling the system, or a system that is not responding to the control, is a service call. We come out and diagnose. The cause may be the thermostat, the wiring, or the equipment itself. We start from what the house is doing, not from a brand list.

Service calls and repairs

On a new system

When we install or replace a system, the control is part of that install. We look at the house and the equipment we are putting in, then set the control to match so heat and cool call the right way from day one.

New systems

What we look at on the visit.

Homeowners describe the symptom. We still confirm the cause at the control and the equipment. These are common starting points, not a menu of guaranteed fixes.

  • Blank or dead display

The thermostat screen is dark, or it will not power up the way it should. We look at power to the control and how it ties into the system.

  • No response to a setpoint change

You raise or lower the temperature and the system does not answer. We check whether the control is calling, and whether the equipment is answering that call.

  • Heat and cool seem switched

The mode will not change over, or heat and cool feel reversed. We look at how the control is set up against the equipment it is supposed to run.

  • New equipment needs the control set up

A new system needs its control matched to the install. On that visit we set it so the equipment and the thermostat work together. New systems.

Once we are at the house.

The appointment gets us there. This is the work after we arrive when the control is part of the call.

  1. Start from the symptom

We look at what the thermostat is doing and what the system is doing, side by side.

  2. Diagnose the path

We check the control, the connection to the equipment, and the equipment response. The problem may sit in more than one place.

  3. Tell you what we found

You hear it in plain language. If the control needs to be replaced or set up with the equipment, we say so. If the system itself is the issue, we stay on that.

Related equipment

When the install is a heat pump or a ductless system, the control conversation is part of that equipment path. Start there if you are looking at a new system of that type.

When the control is part of a new install.

New installations include a 1-year labor warranty, plus the manufacturer warranty on the equipment. If the control is part of that new install, this coverage applies to the job. Warranty information.

We start from the equipment, not a brand list.

If the thermostat or the system is not responding, tell us what it is doing. We start from the equipment in the house.
